SKAPHOS – Cult of Uzura (vinyl)
Regular price €30,99 Save -15%“Cult of Uzura” sees the dedicated French death/black metal band Skaphos fleshing out their sound on their third album – first on a label – to become more expressive and impactful than ever before. At this point, their proficiency is undeniable and their sound is a beautiful rendering of the two extreme styles, spiked with mean dissonance and steeped in an aura of mysticism. The execution remains ruthless and forceful despite showing subtlety in the emotive passages and deftness in the tempo changes. The gnarly death and black metal rawness is palpable even after having their disparate elements congealed on this album and the sound is more powerful than can be conceived for an album having this level of expression. In addition, the alternating contrast of chunky riffing with acerbic parts creates a lasting impression on the listener. This is a remarkable album in the death/black metal style that has actual substance along with the right aesthetics and sound.

ESCHATON – Techtalitarian (vinyl)
Regular price €30,99 Save -15%Technical death metal band Eschaton return after a gap of six years with a reinvigorated, star-studded line-up that undoubtedly elevates their sound to hitherto unexplored heights. They have none other than Christian Münzner of former Obscura and Necrophagist fame accompanying the band founder Josh Berry on guitars. For the vocals, they have enlisted the services of Mac Smith of Apogean and Abyssalis and for the bass, they have brought on Scott Bradly from Inanimate Existence while Darren Cesca of Pillory and formerly in Deeds of Flesh and Arsis continues to hold down the fort on drums. Most importantly, this line-up sounds just as devastating on this album as it does on paper. They have contributed to creating a tech death album that can stand on its own and does not have to be necessarily pitted against any of the aforementioned bands’ past efforts. The members excel in their own specialized ways and they manage to make it work. It is meticulously and passionately put together which is all too apparent in the music that can be dizzyingly fast and mind-bogglingly technical but also groovy and memorable while being on the whole diverse yet dynamic and pulsating with energy. It is not just music meant for the tech death fans; it is music that will invariably get them excited. As such, this should be regarded as an landmark album in the style, with the presence of the illustrious members in the lineup not taking away from the irrefutable fact that this is indeed great tech death music.

REPLICANT – Infinite Mortality (CD)
Regular price €14,00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 135): Computation results in '-Infinity'%After having smashed prevailing standards for the style with their unique approach on their highly lauded previous release, Replicant take things further still with their new full length, finding ways to make their music even more convoluted and impactful while retaining their trademark dissonant and catchy sound. They’ve found ways to add new aspects to it without hampering the momentum, constantly changing things up with the listener’s body still lashing uncontrollably. The songs veer off in their own unexpected, thrilling directions while upholding the inherent semblance of groove, only to reconnect later with greater force. Things seem to add up and make sense as the album progresses, an ostensibly innocuous mechanical contraption getting constant upgrades to become potentially world-ending. There’s fire in the songwriting, the members refusing to succumb to the lull of complacency and working furiously, constantly on the songs to elevate them to a rarefied category. It sees the stature of the band rising, the sound evolving methodically and convincingly, the album giving more than what could be expected from them having already established their identity, and in turn setting new standards for others yet again.

PAGANIZER – Flesh Requiem (CD)
Regular price €14,00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 135): Computation results in '-Infinity'%Swedish death metal veterans Paganizer only seem to get better with age. Where most bands mellow down or start repeating themselves in a mechanical way, Paganizer’s music has increasingly become more nuanced. They are able to express themselves far more effectively, both when swinging the axe and also when conjuring up the soul-tearing melodies out of thin air. They’re stepping out of their own shadow and imbuing their music with emotive tunes which work exceedingly well because of the contrast with the heavier parts. It’s naturally done too, part of taking the sound ahead rather than forcibly altering it. The result is a sound that is superbly tempered; a glorious, progressive alternating between the bone-splintering music and tuneful expressions of the innermost feelings. ‘Flesh Requiem’ has some of the best songs written by the band, a varied mix of the the kind of music you’ve come to expect from the band and some refreshing epic ones, and with so many of them getting seared in your memory after listening to it, it’s easy to regard the album as among the finest in their extensive discography.

FELGRAVE – Otherlike Darknesses (CD)
Regular price €14,00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 135): Computation results in '-Infinity'%After dropping a well-received death/doom album five years back, Felgrave has crafted an ingenious album melding influences of doom, black and death metal in a way rarely done before. The one-man band has broken the mould and the music on this album flows in an intuitive, undulating, almost whimsical manner, touching upon several styles and effortlessly shape shifting through them all. The songs are between 12 to 18 minutes long and each one seems to tell a tale of its own. There is so much going on in each song that it demands repeated listens which isn’t necessarily arduous because of the smooth transitions and the overall coherency. The sound is strangely all encompassing – there are acoustic passages with clean vocals as well as intense and complex parts that wouldn’t be out of place on a technical death metal album. It’s stuff like this which makes this album fascinating, and what makes it come alive is the passion with which it is meticulously crafted – it seeps through the music and elevates it beyond the ostensible stringing together of disparate parts. ‘Otherlike Darknesses’ is multi-faceted and yet has a fairly cohesive sound with exceptional song writing; albums like these definitely don’t come out too often.

HAXPROCESS – Beyond What Eyes Can (CD)
Regular price €14,00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 135): Computation results in '-Infinity'%Haxprocess are playing incredibly heavy death metal music – leaden, thick and dark, and are somehow attempting to go progressive wielding that sound. It’s like Morbid Angel covering The Chasm songs under the influence of Blood Incantation. This is but a vague comparison just to get some idea of what this ambitious band is trying to do over here. It’s death metal through-and-through but they’re doing so much with it, it would bring a tear to any classic fan of the genre. They insist on having only epic songs averaging 10 minutes; the album has only four songs and it lasts for just as long as a normal album would. The music however is relentless in its barrage of gargantuan otherworldly riffs, what with the ever-changing patterns and combinations, albeit delivered in a comfortable pace so that everything can be registered for posterity. It’s an album that can withstand endless listens, offer everything a death metal fan would want and yet do so much more than an average album would because of their constantly evolving music that manages to remain engrossing as well. This is as epic as a death metal album can possibly get without letting go of any of the heaviness that’s an inherent part of the band’s sound over here.

DEMIURGON- Miasmatic Deathless Chamber (CD)
Regular price €14,00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 135): Computation results in '-Infinity'%Demiurgon whip up a storm almost literally with their kind of ferocious, unbridled death metal. Hurtling towards the listener at ridiculous speeds, it stirs up a variety of emotions usually of the violent kind. Mostly though, there is sheer trepidation listening to the forceful nature of their music, and strangely, at the same time an innate sense of awe witnessing the control they have over the entire catastrophic event. Having over a decade of experience, they have cultivated the art of channeling the raw energy into writing satisfyingly long compositions marked with numerous variations and coming with up incessantly buzzing, catchy and memorable albeit inevitably head-imploding riffs. After all, this is pure death metal on steroids, fanned by brutal and technical doses to attain monstrous proportions. It’s the kind of music a death metal fan can’t dislike – it’s simply dialled up to a fiery level here, backed by years of songwriting expertise and delivered like a punch to the face.

RETCHING – Charming the Decomposed (CD)
Regular price €14,00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 135): Computation results in '-Infinity'%On only their debut release, Retching have found a way to present the gore-soaked, rotten, old school-inclined death metal sound that we all love with quality songwriting that elevates it beyond the nostalgic, aspiring bands of this ilk. It is what keeps the appeal from being diminished upon multiple listens and keeps the listener coming back for more as there’s more than just simplified caveman-mosh death metal savagery on offer here. The songs, while accessible and laden with compelling hooks, are intricate and structured, and do a lot more before offering the much-desired dose of primal brutality. The influences too are assimilated very well from various death metal bands – this is no direct Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation clone; it bears elements as most such death metal bands do, but they’ve attempted to go about creating something delectable and effective in their own way, and to that extent this works well. There’s no beating about the bush here – if you’re into death metal that’s heavy, catchy, and fun but also not completely senseless, Retching will make your day.

FLOATING – Hesitating Lights (CD)
Regular price €14,00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 135): Computation results in '-Infinity'%Floating from Sweden are finding increasingly impressive ways to enrich death metal music with progressive and post punk influences. While their previous release turned heads, this new one is far more refined, confident and accomplished. The primary elements have their place in the music with none of it getting dislodged by the dominance of the other and that’s where the beauty lies – there’s a subtlety, an emotional fragility that comes through in death metal music, which usually sounds too tough and overbearing for the most part. Moreover, these unconventional influences aren’t copy-pasted or arbitrarily introduced to heavy music; they’re carefully gauged, treated and woven together in parts where the well-trodden death metal music would come alive. As a result, listening to this album is an absolute delight. It’s fascinating to see how they’ve made sure that each of the songs stand out and that there’s no fixed pattern that might just render their music predictable. “Hesitating Lights” is a thoughtfully composed, beautifully tempered album of bold, refreshing death metal music, which in these times, is no mean feat.

BYONOISEGENERATOR – Subnormal Dives + Neuromechanica (CD)
Regular price €14,00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 135): Computation results in '-Infinity'%Byonoisegenerator are set to make a splash again after seven long years with a new album of what they’d like to call “jazzgrind” that sounds just as shocking and exhilarating as you would imagine. It’s the kind of album that compels us to see things from a different perspective. While jazz influences and usage of a saxophone in extreme music has been witnessed before, it’s hardly ever done with a style of music this extreme and cathartic. The dedicated sax player infuses the violent music with jazzy parts that not only serve as a break from the cacophony but they also punctuate the music, enhance it, and elevate it from your regular grind or death metal band. The music is highly intricate, even technical, and despite the short length of the songs, it might require multiple listens for it to be fully deciphered and for the unsuspecting listeners to get its odd appeal. They’ve used the free-style spirit to concoct music that’s outstanding and in the process have also ensured that it’s more than something having temporary novelty value. At this point in their career, they’ve been able to masterfully meld the seemingly contradictory influences and have created songs that are more than just ideas, with each having their own identity and charm. It is clear that Byonoisegenerator are onto something special and they have the chops and attitude to pull off something as outrageous and irresistible as this.
